This painting was one of my first oil paintings and was completed during a week long summer school course I attended at the Slade School of Art in London around 2008.

This course introduced some new techniques about how to paint, draw and portray different elements of the female form. I think this painting reveals the struggle that I experienced (for example in the fragmentation of the hands) but at the same time I think it also has a sense of calmness about it which comes from spending a long time working with the model in a single sitting. I think it also marks the start of my journey into abstraction. It’s a real exploration of colour and I really tried to push that through the hands
